I just had same Moen experience. Position the ends of a good pair of needle-nose pliers on opposite ends of the upper and lower interior tabs. Using your vice grips, turn the needle-nose pliers in the direction which will turn the tabs @ 1/2 inch to the left or right. Remove pliers, do the reverse.
