Front diff leaking
Dec 7, 2017 · Any oil "sloshed" over the outlet tube on the diff will tend to get pushed up the tube with thermal expansion and or elevation change. The breather outlet on the diff is well above the "at rest" oil level. Typical scenario. Drive off cold in 4wd. Diff/oil warms and expands.Sometimes dirt/mud will get in that area and cause the seal to leak, and sometimes a clogged diff vent will cause pressure build up in the front diff, forcing a slight leak at an axle seal. Consider inspecting/cleaning the front diff vent, and using some brake clean spray to get into the area around the CV axle where it enters the housing at ...Remove the 2 nuts holding tube to mounting point. Slide the tube out. Disassemble the unit. Replace the seal and reassemble. When putting the tube back on you'll have to pry the differential down to get the the tube back in. After inspection the tech saidthe hole left side axle needed to be replaced due to exsesive play.Not one has leaked (knock on wood) Keys: Use only OEM seal & front drive shaft. Lube seal seating area and seal with gear lube, than install. Seat level & square with inner lip of diff. Apply grease on inside of seal and FDS, prep to install. Use great care during install of FDS, not to knock seal out of alignment.On the bottom of the diff is a eyelet for what i dont know. I tool a long screwdriver and placed it thru this hole and pulled down on it to angle the diff just enough to sucessfully remove the tube. If you are draining the fluid completely, do so now. Remove all the diff cover bolts, pry the cover off. Clean the inside of the cover, bead of RTV (go outside of the bolt holes), and reinstall. When these begin to fail the metal particals have a grinding effect on the seals. So when changing over to my all season's I noticed some oil on my front diff. Seems to be leaking at the seam, but it migrates so far up towards the engine it seems crazy to think the oil could migrate that far up. It is hard to see in the pictures but I did my best. Forr it to just now start leaking because of an overfill doesn't sound right. I also rarely ever use the 4wd. I took it into the toyota dealership last week and they said it was a front seal and replaced it. FYI, when replacing axle seals of this type, If it's leaking significantly enough to actually drip, I would replace using a different mechanic.
