I'm just seeing this thread for the first time, but I was going to comment that it could either be a failure in the VTM-4 system OR a different failure that has disabled the VTM-4 system causing the light to illuminate. In your case, it was obviously the latter. The VTM-4 lock button inside the cab simply locks the rear differential to force the vehicle to send power to the rear wheels (meaning a helpful way to get the vehicle unstuck).
