The solution to me was the BCM mega fuse at the front of the battery box. If you start the vehicle and let it idle, then grab those wires by the battery box and move them around, chances are you'll be able to get the vehicle to shut down. The shifter has solenoids to lock things down and unlock them, and it has an encoder to report what gear you're in. Not sure how much of a mechanical connection there is on the 2015's though.

But when I looked at the engine compartment of the Escape, I found that the battery is positioned in such a way that the negative terminal is completely inaccessible and there is no physical method that I can find to connect jumper leads to that battery. Remove the plastic cover over the nut, remove the nut, lift the wiper blade all the way up like when you clean the windows then lift up on the nut end. You may have to rock it back and forth a bit.
