Download the latest version of SMAPI (see a pictorial guide ). Extract the .zip file somewhere (but not in your game folder!). Right-click install on Mac.command and choose open. Follow the on-screen instructions.¹. That's it! Just launch the game to play with mods. You don't need to change your Steam launch options.
My full load time is about 10 minutes. I run ~130 mods, but they are large. (SDV Expanded, Ridgeside Village, East Scarpe, + large visual change mods). I've never had extremely long load times but it has gotten better with more recent Steam Deck OS updates.
