I normally use the throttle half of my Thrustmaster HOTAS for collective inputs. I don't even use the stick half in Arma, preferring the mouse and keyboard for attitude inputs.

I'm quite happy with the helicopter flight mechanics in the game, though I understand there are changes coming (ToH mechanics?). Point your gun and shoot, just make sure you're going fast enough to not get shot back at. Also make sure you are in a good position so that anti air doesn't fire at you. That will come with experience and there's no other way to learn it than die to it a lot really. 1.
In Arma 2, when you pressed the collective raise/lower buttons it lowered the collective based on how long you pressed them, as if you were raising and lowering the height of the helicopter, and when you weren't pressing anything the helicopter would hold stable.
