Johnson outboard timing adjustment.
What is the easiest way to set the timing on a 1975 Johnson 3 cyl 2 stroke outboard enging. I have noticed vibration and it sounds like it may be missing. Can this be done without a timing light? I have noticed a couple of backfires when starting which leads me to believe it could very well be the timing. Thanks for your help.

The key locates the flywheel in the proper relationship to the crankshaft and hence timing cannot get drastically out of spec unless someone has messed with the advance linkage.Jun 8, 2011. #6. Throttle pickup timing (when the cam hits the roller) should be approximatly 4 deg ATDC. To adjsut the pickup timing change the lenghth of the rod by loosening the locknut and turning the knurled nut.Remove the s/plugs. Rig up a spark tester so that you can connect a timer light to #1 cylinder. Set the throttle to full throttle, full spark advance. Have the timer base pressing on that rubber stop. Spin the prop if need be if the engine is going into forward gear so that the dog and gear lobes mesh properly.
